Pushes and Pulls: Hi(S)tory of the Demand Pull Model of Innovation. [REVIEW]Joseph P. Lane & Benoit Godin - 2013 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 38 (5):621-654.
Much has been written about the linear model of innovation. While it may have been the dominant model used to explain technological innovation for decades, alternatives did exist. One such alternative—generally discussed as being the exact opposite of the linear model—is the demand-pull model. Beginning in the 1960s, people from different disciplines started looking at technological innovation from a demand rather than a supply perspective. The theory was that technological innovation is stimulated by market demand rather than by scientific discoveries. (...)

  5. Heidegger and Sartre: An Essay on Being and Place.Joseph P. Fell - 1979 - New York: Columbia University Press.
The philosophical relation between Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre is important, partly because of the considerable influence of Heidegger on Sartre, and partly because of their critiques of each other.

Intuitive confidence: Choosing between intuitive and nonintuitive alternatives.Joseph P. Simmons & Leif D. Nelson - 2006 - Journal of Experimental Psychology: General 135 (3):409-428.
People often choose intuitive rather than equally valid nonintuitive alternatives. The authors suggest that these intuitive biases arise because intuitions often spring to mind with subjective ease, and the subjective ease leads people to hold their intuitions with high confidence. An investigation of predictions against point spreads found that people predicted intuitive options more often than equally valid nonintuitive alternatives. Critically, though, this effect was largely determined by people's confidence in their intuitions. Across naturalistic, expert, and laboratory samples, against personally (...)

Leveraging a multidimensional linguistic analysis of constructed responses produced by college readers.Joseph P. Magliano, Lauren Flynn, Daniel P. Feller, Kathryn S. McCarthy, Danielle S. McNamara & Laura Allen - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The goal of this study was to assess the relationships between computational approaches to analyzing constructed responses made during reading and individual differences in the foundational skills of reading in college readers. We also explored if these relationships were consistent across texts and samples collected at different institutions and texts. The study made use of archival data that involved college participants who produced typed constructed responses under thinking aloud instructions reading history and science texts. They also took assessments of vocabulary (...)

  13. The Impact of Continuity Editing in Narrative Film on Event Segmentation.Joseph P. Magliano & Jeffrey M. Zacks - 2011 - Cognitive Science 35 (8):1489-1517.
Filmmakers use continuity editing to engender a sense of situational continuity or discontinuity at editing boundaries. The goal of this study was to assess the impact of continuity editing on how people perceive the structure of events in a narrative film and to identify brain networks that are associated with the processing of different types of continuity editing boundaries. Participants viewed a commercially produced film and segmented it into meaningful events, while brain activity was recorded with functional magnetic resonance imaging (...)

Emotion in the thought of Sartre.Joseph P. Fell - 1965 - New York,: Columbia University Press.
Available for the first time in English, this is the definitive account of the practice of sexual slavery the Japanese military perpetrated during World War II by the researcher principally responsible for exposing the Japanese government's responsibility for these atrocities. The large scale imprisonment and rape of thousands of women, who were euphemistically called "comfort women" by the Japanese military, first seized public attention in 1991 when three Korean women filed suit in a Toyko District Court stating that they had (...)

Revisiting the Bright and Dark Sides of Capital Flows in Business Groups.Joseph P. H. Fan, Li Jin & Guojian Zheng - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 134 (4):509-528.
Prior studies report that the business group structure and the associated intra-group capital flows are prone to conflicts of interest between controlling shareholders and minority investors. Yet business group is a prevalent and stable structure around the globe, particularly where capital markets are underdeveloped. Using data from China, this paper empirically studies the trade-off between the negative and positive roles played by intra-group capital flows and tests the efficiency implications of such trade-off. We find that from the perspective of the (...)

    Art and Philosophy in Schelling.Joseph P. Lawrence - 1988 - The Owl of Minerva 20 (1):5-19.
The problem of the relationship between art and philosophy is deeply rooted in the philosophical tradition. When Plato excluded artists from the philosophers’ mythical republic, he seemed to be assuming a strict opposition between art and philosophy. Artists do not know what they are saying. Because their creation is grounded in the madness of inspiration, they would be unable to give accounts for their doctrines even if doctrines could be gleaned from their works. Philosophers, on the other hand, must be (...)

    Toward a Metaphysics of Silence.Joseph P. Lawrence - 2002 - Idealistic Studies 32 (3):255-271.
The metaphysics of presence has led not only to the closure of rationalized systems that define modernity, but also to what can appear as its opposite, the freely flowing movement of information (and of capital) characteristic of the post-modern “de-centered” world. Ideas, after all, require a depth dimension that ultimately proves irreconcilable with the one-dimensionality of the purely present. It is for this reason that the rejection of metaphysics (which is only the final consequence of the metaphysics of presence) fails (...)
